Obituary for Robert Lawrence McConnell

Robert Lawrence McConnell, 88, of Franklin, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007.

A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late Loren A. McConnell and Bessie Laura McConnell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elloise Land. Robert served his country with honor in the Infantry of the Army of the United States during World War II from 1941 to 1945 and involved campaigns in New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago; receiving the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic/Pacific Theater Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. He retired after 35 years with Zickgraf Hardwood Co.; was a member of Prentiss Baptist Church and was a life member of the VFW Post 7339.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Ledford McConnell; four children, Lee Roy McConnell, Gary Lewis McConnell, Joann Bleckley and Shirley Sue Speed all of Franklin; eight grandchildren, Teresa Bleckley Zoellner, Sheila Speed Green, Rena Bleckley Shirley, Kevin McConnell, Steve Speed, Kellie McConnell Burns, Jennifer McConnell O'Connor and Timothy Bleckley; two sisters, Charlotte Everetts of Cornelia, GA and Bonnie Callahan of Charlotte, NC; brother, James Benjamin McConnell of Franklin; 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tues., Jan. 23, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Randy Drinnon and Rev. Don Moffitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Prentiss Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Macon Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Kevin McConnell, Steve Speed, Stanley Shirley, Chris Burns, Michael Zoellner and Todd Green.

Memorial donations may be made to the Prentiss Baptist Church, C/O Faye Wilson, 605 Middle Skeenah Road, Franklin, NC 28734.
