Verlin Lafayette Curtis, 87, of Franklin NC, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Verlin was born in Macon County to the late Charles Curtis Sr. and Minnie McCall Curtis. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Elsie Brendle, Christine Brabson, Charles Curtis Jr, Willie Curtis, Claude Curtis, Catherine Cunningham, Jimmy Curtis, Barbara Bradley, and Polly Lovell; son-in-law, Jim Parker, and a grandson, Hunter Curtis. He was a member of Watauga Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, training union leader, and Sunday School teacher. Verlin served a total of 40 years in the United States Air Force and Air Force reserves. In 1965, he opened Curtis TV and Appliance, which later became Curtis TV/Radioshack. He was a member of Gideons International, where had served as President and Treasurer; he also served as Vice Mayor and Town Alderman for the Town of Franklin. He was member of the American Legion Post #108. He enjoyed flying planes, riding jet skis, and bowling. Verlin loved his family and spending time with them was his favorite pastime.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marvel Brendle Curtis; four children, Susan Elaine Parker of Bowersville, GA, Steve Curtis (Cindy) of Anderson, SC, Tony Curtis (Monica) of Franklin, Karen Leslie (David) of Abbeville, SC.; sister, Judy Carpenter of Franklin; nine grandchildren, James Parker (Amy), Daniel Parker (Jessica), Cortney Curtis, Ethan Curtis, Morgan Breedlove (Derik), Jonathan Leslie, Jordan Leslie, Hannah James (Austin), Natalie Simmons; three great grandchildren, Sophie Parker, Jaxon Parker, Ava Breedlove; three step grandchildren, Fisher, Rhett, and Charlotte Ashworth; and one great great grandchild, Finley James. He is also survived by his dog, "Molly", who was his loving and faithful companion.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, November 18 th, at Watauga Baptist Church. Rev. Thomas James and Rev. Wesley Price will officiate. Military rites will be presented by the American Legion Post #108 and VFW Post #7339. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-3pm, two hours prior to the service at Watauga Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great grandson.
