Obituary

John "Sherrill" Stamey went home to be with Jesus on August 23, 2023.

Sherrill was born in Macon County to Howard and Grace Bates Stamey on December 31, 1936. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen "Dood" Stamey; his son, John Howard Stamey; his grandson James Coleman Stamey; siblings: Jack Stamey, and Mary Ann Stamey Watts.

Sherrill is survived by one son, Scott (Lynn Fish) Stamey, daughter-in-law Jane Stamey; brother Lloyd (Joyce) Stamey; grandchildren: Jessica (Jeremy) Stamey McConnell, Tyler (Alison) Stamey, Emily (Chris Evans) Stamey; great grandchildren: Milo McConnell, Huck McConnell, Amos McConnell, Ericka Reed, and Kadan Hart.

Sherrill enjoyed working more than anything. He was happiest staying busy, and never spent time idly. When he had a trackhoe there was no earth unturned. Even when he flipped the trackhoe- he was ready to get right back to it.

Most of his years were spent working at the car lot with his sons, combining his two favorite things: his family and working.

Sherrill was a loving grandfather to his grandchildren. He lived next door to all of them as they were growing up. From the time his grandchildren got old enough to remember, they also spent a lot of time at the car lot. Sherrill valued time together, and he built a close and loving family. One of their fond memories was of him keeping a convertible, so he was able to take them on rides. Often, he would stop at the ice cream parlor. This was a very special treat, because spending money was this man's least favorite thing to do.

While we are sad he is no longer with us; we are at peace knowing he is in the arms of Jesus and back with the woman he spent 65 years loving on Earth. He missed Dood terribly, and he was ready for all the reunions he knew were coming in Heaven.

A funeral service will be held Monday, August 28, at 3pm in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Don Moffitt, Rev. Don Bates, and Rev. Terry Moffitt will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2-3pm, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Shepherd Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Stamey, Jeremy McConnell, Chris Evans, Jamie Stamey, Elbert McConnell, and Timmy Norris. Honorary pallbearers will be Milo, Huck, and Amos McConnell.
