Obituary

Ronald (Ron) Drummond, 92, beloved husband and father of three daughters, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2024. Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Ron was a North Carolina resident for 50 years. He was a retired meteorologist, an avid golfer, master gardener, nature lover and proud West Virginian, known to his family and friends for his dry wit and generosity.

An excellent golfer, he set course records throughout Western North Carolina and was known to lighten the wallets of many a dogfighter. He was known affectionately to his fellow golfers as "Grumpy" for his ability to take his infrequent golfing losses with ease.

In his professional life, he served as chief meteorologist for the NOAA National Weather Service. His more than 30-year career in meteorology began with a seven-year stint in the United States Air Force Weather Service serving overseas with the U2 program. He received his meteorological training at Pennsylvania State University.

In 1978, he received a Department of Commerce Silver Medal for his life-saving efforts in the Appalachian flood of 1977. And the following year, he was appointed Chief Meteorologist for the National Weather Service Office in Asheville, where he retired, after having served in that capacity in Beckley, WV.

Ron had a curious mind and enjoyed learning new things. He was especially interested in history and computer technology. Upon retiring, he taught math and computer classes at Hendersonville High School and Blue Ridge Technical College.

Ron is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alta; three daughters: Rhonda (CJ) Spainhour, Donna (Steven) Medeiros and Kara (Matthew) Drummond; four grandchildren: Bradley and Kristina Spainhour, Candice and Mitchell Medeiros; two great grandchildren; three step children and their families; and his faithful furry companion, Louie.

It cannot be overstated how deeply he was loved by his family and how much he will be missed.
