Obituary

Roger O. LaRochelle, 89, of Franklin, NC formerly of Scaly Mountain, NC passed away on December 28, 2023 at Mission Hospital, Asheville after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on November 10, 1934, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Roger was the son of the late Adelard & Albertha (Camire) LaRochelle. He was one of ten children, growing up in Amesbury and Lynn, MA. His first significant business experience was with a catering company in Lynn, where he learned all aspects of that specialty.

Roger's adventurous spirit led him to California as a young adult, where he met his lifetime partner of 49 years, John "Jack" Carlson. Roger and Jack spent over three decades in the former British Guiana and then Venezuela where they were diamond and gold prospectors and merchants before returning to the U.S. in 1996 and operating "Rarities" curios store in Highlands, NC. Mr. Carlson predeceased him in 2006.

In addition to being a collector and consignor of worldly treasures, Roger took pride in caring for his multitude of exotic plants and beautiful gardens, where he spent much of his time, even when faced with difficult health challenges. He will be lovingly remembered as "Roger the Dodger" to all who shared close relationships with him and as a caring supporter of various charities and organizations, including the humane society, reflecting his abundant love for animals.

Survivors include a brother, Arthur LaRochelle of Hendersonville, NC, several nieces and nephews, many dear friends, and his beloved dog, "Bette."

Macon Funeral Home has provided arrangements, and a private service will be held in the near future.
