Obituary

Robert Edward Bennett Sr, 94 of Franklin, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on May 13th, 2025

He was born November 26th, 1930 in Lakeland Florida to the late Edward L and Lily Morris Bennett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Ann Pearce Bennett, siblings, Jane Bennett Freier, and Howard Bennett, his son Bruce Bennett, and great-grandson Andrew Bennett.

After graduating from the Summerlin Institute in Bartow Florida in 1949, Robert worked for Harold's Feed Store until he joined the US Navy in January 1951 where he served as a Gunner's Mate on the USS Frank Knox (DDR 742) during the Korean War. After he was discharged in November of 1954, he worked for Publix Supermarkets in Lakeland, Florida and in 1962 was transferred to the newly opened Publix distribution warehouse in Miami, Florida. In 1970 he moved his family to Franklin, North Carolina where he built houses, operated a service station, and eventually retired from the US Forest Service. He was active his community as a member of the Cowee Community Development organization, a member of the Franklin Search and Rescue Squad, patrolled with the Macon County Sheriff's department, and was a deacon of the Cowee Baptist Church.

Robert is survived by his sons, Robert "Bob" and Shirley of Westminster SC, David and Bonnie of Franklin, daughter-in-laws Julie Nelson (Glenn) of Ocala, Florida and Jeannie Jeter (Jeff), 6 grandchildren, Megan Bennett, Eddie Bennett (Crystal), Monica Turner, Chris Turner (Sherri), Charles Bennett (Blesi) and Patrick Bennett (Stephani), a brother, Clifford Bennett (Betty) of Orlando, Florida, sister Carol Allred, of St Augustine, Florida, sister-in-laws Gloria Bennett (Howard), Alice Bennett (Clifford), and Alice Blanton of Marble, NC, ten great grandchildren, one great great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Tonya Ashe (Tim) of Franklin, a dear and much loved addition to the family.

A special thank you to the staff and residents of Grandview Manor of Franklin.

The family will receive friends at Macon Funeral Home on Monday, May 19th, from 12-1pm. Graveside service will be Monday, May 19th, at 1:30pm at Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev Ronnie Branson and Rev Jason Smith will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Cowee Baptist Church.
