Obituary

Jim Hammel, 80 of Franklin, NC, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 26, 2014.
Raised in Pitman, NJ, Jim was the son of the late Ada and Norman Hammel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandson, Philip Grey Hammel. He was a member of Pitman Boy Scout Troop 18 and a member of the Pitman High School and Hobo bands. Jim graduated from Pitman High School in 1953 and joined the U.S. Army where he served in the 173rd U.S. Army Band attached to Fort Dix. After an honorable discharge, he was employed by N.J. Bell Telephone transferring to Southern Bell Telephone in West Palm Beach, FL in 1968. He retired in 1990 and relocated to Sky Valley, GA then later to Franklin, NC. He enjoyed woodworking and owned and operated Franklin Wood Warehouse in the mid 1990's.
Jim was the devoted husband of Lois Hammel for 58 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, James, Robert and John Hammel and wife Sharon; grandsons, Christopher Hammel and Jesse Hammel; granddaughters, Sara Hammel Karner and husband Kevin, Candace Hammel and Lauren Hammel; great-grandsons, Pierce Bennett Karner and Connor Reece Hammel; sister, Lois Hammel Engle and husband Redmond; sister-in-law, Miriam Storch and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30th, at the First Alliance Church, where Jim was a member and served as a Deacon for several years. Rev. Scott Eichelberger will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice or a love offering to First Alliance Church.
