Newman Gary Mathis went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the age of 91.

Newman was born and raised here in the Caney Fork Community. He was the son of the late Johnie and Gurtie Mathis. Newman had nine brothers and two sisters. He will be joining seven brothers and one sister in Heaven. Leaving behind three brothers and one sister. Newman is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Claybo Matihis, one son, Gary Mathis, and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Gary Mathis. He also has five great granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews. He was loved by his family dearly and will be greatly missed.

Newman was a beloved man and a friend to all. He enjoyed the great outdoors and loved to squirrel hunt. He was the oldest member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church on Caney Fork.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 23rd, at 3pm, at Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
