Obituary

Michael Handley was born March 2, 1973, in Plantation, Florida, to Bill and Joyce Handley. Michael's family, which included an older brother, Billy, moved to Franklin, North Carolina, when he was in the second grade. He had a small town childhood with neighborhood friends—riding bikes and playing in the woods across from his home. Once his adventurous personality had him arriving home after falling out of a tree with a small part of a branch protruding from his forehead declaring there was no need to go to the hospital. Even then, he was fearless.

Michael graduated from Franklin High School in 1991 and attended Western Carolina University. He was a patriot who chose to show his love of country by serving in the military. Even though his dad urged him to join the Navy and his uncle suggested the Air Force, Michael wanted to be in the thick of things so he enlisted in the Army. He became a member of the 509th Airborne and was a combat veteran, spending time at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq. He loved jumping out of airplanes, which he said was really awesome and only scary for a few seconds until the parachute deployed.

After being discharged, Michael returned to Franklin. He had a real zest for life and a love for children. He volunteered in the school system, and he was truly in his element coaching Youth League Football since he absolutely loved football and the kids who played. He just enjoyed being a coach, a tutor, or a mentor.

Michael had a heart for disabled veterans and was also an active advocate for veterans who suffered from PTSD. He welcomed them to his home and shared his love of hunting and fishing with them. He even built a blind on his deck which gave those who were unable to climb a deer stand or walk through the woods an opportunity to hunt.

In 2019, Michael married Annji, the love of his life. They shared their home with four of the finest pups that ever lived—Fatboy, Sherman, Harley, and Jax.

Michael passed from this life unexpectedly after a short illness on August 31, 2024. Survivors include his wife, Annji; his parents, Bill and Joyce; his brother, Billy; his sister-in-law, Heidi; his niece, Leighanne; and his nephew, Ty. These, who loved Michael best, are comforted by knowing he is now with Jesus, and they will see him again.

Michael's legacy is his big heart, his service to his country and community, his friendship, and his love for his family. He will be remembered as a caring coach to hundreds of young people.
