Mary Josephine "Mary Jo" Swafford Campbell, 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, after a brief illness. She was born in Macon County on August 3, 1944 to the late Paul and Elizabeth Poindexter Swafford.
Mary Jo was a faithful member of Iotla Baptist Church, where she enjoyed serving in many areas, including the nursery, choir, flower committee, VBS, WMU, Christmas plays and dramas, and many social activities. She especially enjoyed delivering meals to shut ins on Wednesday evenings. She also loved gardening and doing yard work, with a special love for growing and tending flowers. Mary Jo dearly loved her church family, friends, and neighbors in the Iotla community. In addition to homemaker, she worked in retail stores in Franklin, including The Twins' Shop, The Jack and Jill Store, and Men's Casuals. She also worked at the Franklin Meat Market, Pizza Peddler, and Iotla Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1994 by her husband of 32 years, Jim Campbell; a brother, Newell Swafford; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Swafford.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Ron Campbell and wife Jan of Otto, NC; a daughter, Tammy Campbell Hoyle and husband John of Boiling Springs, NC; a brother, Charles Swafford and wife Gerry of Franklin, NC; a sister, Annette Busby of Raleigh, NC; grandson, Isaac Campbell of Otto, NC; grandson, Tanner Hoyle and wife Sarah of Raleigh, NC ; granddaughter, Erin Keener and husband Luke of Otto, NC ; great-granddaughters Teegan Campbell and Drew Keener; with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Iotla Baptist Church, 1537 Iotla Church Road, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, 2024. The celebration of life service will follow in the church sanctuary at 3:30 with the Reverends Brandon Breedlove and Steve Reeves officiating. The interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Isaac Campbell, Tanner Hoyle, Luke Keener, Joey Gibson, Terry Breedlove, Todd Bennett, Wayne Lynch, Ryan Rowland, Josh Lynch, and Tony Ledford will serve as pallbearers.
The Messengers Sunday School class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
