Obituary

Martha Marie Smith peacefully passed away on September 29th, 2026, in Asheville. NC. Martha was a 48-year resident of Franklin, NC.

A native of Illinois, Martha relocated to Florida in the early 1950s and moved to Franklin with her family in 1979. Martha retired from Southwestern Community College as an assistant to the Public Safety Law Enforcement program and embraced retirement in travels, and time with her family. Active in the Resurrection Lutheran Church, Martha participated in choir, and fund-raising benefits for the church for over 20 years. Her focus was providing a work ethic to her Grandchildren and embraced the love of family and friendship through her love and inspiration to so many individuals.

Predeceased in death by her husband, Buford Smith, and sons, Carl and Randy Smith of Franklin, NC. Surviving family members: Tom Smith (Jessica), Tim Smith (Kate); Kimberly Smith, all residents of Franklin and loving niece Linda Clark (Steve) of Altamonte Springs, FL.; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.

Services will be held on October 10th, at 2pm, at Macon Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Phillip Cochran will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made in her name to – Macon County Animals Services and to the Grandview Memory Care unit in Franklin, NC

We mourn the loss of such an extraordinary, simple, loving woman who embraced family, her faith, love and patience. She will be deeply missed.
