Marissa Carmella Johnson Burton, “Mamaw”, 55, of Highlands, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Born in Buncombe County, to Lucille McClure Johnson and the late Charles Johnson. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her father‑in‑law, Chuck Burton, and her uncle, Curtis Dodgins.

Marissa worked as a dedicated tax consultant for H&R Block, where she was known for her patience, kindness, and willingness to help anyone who needed guidance. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. She adored her children and grandbaby, who were the joy of her life. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers, was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed taking drives through the mountains she proudly called home.

She is survived by her loving husband, Mike Burton; children, Timothy Burton (Codi) and Brittany Burton Craig (Samuel); mother, Lucille Johnson; her beloved granddaughter, Adeline Burton; her mother‑in‑law, Gail Burton, and her family; her aunt, Linda Dodgins, and her family; and her cousin, Angela Lamb.

Marissa will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her love of family, and the beauty she brought into the world—both in her garden and in the lives of those who knew her.

The family will receive friends on January 9th from 12-1pm at Macon Funeral Home. A service will follow in the Chapel at 1pm, with Rev. Greg Rogers officiating. The family will have a private family burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Due to her love for flowers, the family asks for everyone to shower her service with many beautiful flowers.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Bailey, Jacob Lamb, Samuel Craig, Tanner Williams, and Gabriel Hyatt.
