Marcia Elizabeth McGarity joined the angels on July 2, 2023. She was 83 years old and passed in Asheville, North Carolina.
She was born November 8, 1939, in Miami, Florida. Her family all lived on the same street as her parents Hoyt and May Louise Hitt. She was one of four children, her Brother Tom, Sister Lou Ann who are in heaven with her and survived by her brother Bill. Marcia married our father Jon McGarity and they lived in Miami,FL, Atlanta,GA, Dallas,TX, Severna Park,MD and then in Franklin,N.C.
Our parents love gave them Wendy (Pete), Scott (Cristina) and Ann (John). Her grandchildren, Taylor, Mark, Alexandra, Andrew, Ryley, Laura, McGarity, Arianna, Keegan and Declan. Her great grandchildren Will, Ellie and Hayden, all her nieces and nephews their children and her beloved dog Little Mac.
She attended Jackson High School in Miami with our dad and they fell in love and were married for 48 years. Through all their travels and moves they laid roots for each of their children. She was a stay at home Mom through our childhoods. Taking care of her mother in law for 21 years in addition to wife and mother. They had friends and family in each state. She worked in real estate and owned her own shop for years in Maryland.
They retired to Franklin and created a community within their church and the town of Franklin. She organized backpacks for CareNet, Christmas Secret Santa for countless families from the elementary school, Welcome and Social committee in Laurel Ridge, Alter guild, a Eucharist Minister and servant of God for so many in her community. Marcia was a special person who always made others feel valued, through her compassion and empathy for others, a generous and loving soul. She had a great sense of humor and passionate love for her family. She was feisty and loved a lively conversation to always prove her point. In addition laughing about herself and the ups and downs of life.
All of her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved all her children and grandchildren, all of their adventures, hobbies and sports, their lives. She was everyone's cheerleader. Investing her time in others lives to make them feel special and heard, that was her gift. She was incredibly connected to each one of us. She loved her church and St. John's community of friends, her book club ladies and neighbors in Laurel Ridge. Marcia was a daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend and servant of God. Goodbye to a wonderful woman and beautiful mother. We all adored her with all our hearts and she will be greatly missed everyday.
Her service will be held at St. John's church on August 26 at 11am with reception to follow in the perish hall. The family requests you wear bright colors to the service in celebration of Marcia's love of color.
