Joseph Miers Plant III, 77, of Franklin, NC, passed away June 28, 2024, after a three-year battle with cancer.
He was born June 25, 1947, in Auburn, AL, to Joseph Miers Plant, Jr. and Helen (Beard) Plant, and grew up in Tallahassee, FL, where he graduated from Florida High School. After subsequently graduating from Florida State University, he joined the U.S. Navy flight training program in Pensacola, FL, and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1974. During his 23-year Naval career, he flew 100 combat missions in Viet Nam with Navy squadron VA 105 off the USS Saratoga aircraft carrier. He retired as a Commander in 1989.
After his Naval service, he joined American Airlines, retiring as a Captain in 2006. During the "retirement years" following, he flew crop-dusting aircraft in the northwest, captained a fishing boat in the Virgin Islands, and walked 150 miles on the Appalachian Train before being driven off by an ice storm. Subsequently, he co-founded Winn-Star Development, LLC, in Franklin, NC, a construction company specializing in complex home repair and unusual new construction.
A passionate fisherman, he enjoyed off-shore and big-game fishing with friends, hunting, traveling, reading, and was a gourmet cook.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jamie Starbuck Plant, of Franklin, NC; daughter, Mindy Lee Brady, of Yankeetown, FL; and grandchildren Meghan Starbuck Taylor, of Fort Collins, CO; KayLee Rose Reynolds-Taylor, of Abingdon, VA; Lane Daniel Howard, of Chicago, IL; siblings, Mary Ann Plant (George Klersey) of Hoover, AL and Eugene Plant (Janice Yecco) of Tallahassee, FL.
Following cremation, his ashes will be spread in Florida. A Celebration of Life will be held in Tallahassee later this year. Memorials may be made in his name to the Joseph & Helen Plant Omicron Delta Kappa Scholarship Fund Florida State University Foundation in Tallahassee, FL, or the National Naval Aviation Museum, in Pensacola.
