John Wymer McClure, 74, of Franklin, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. A lifelong resident of Macon County, John was the son of the late William Howard McClure and Alma Hastings McClure. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Billy McClure and Charlie McClure; his sister-in-law, Patti McClure; and his brother-in-law, Gary Boston.
John spent most of his youth in Macon County, occasionally relocating due to his father’s work. He returned to Franklin upon entering high school, where he was a four-year varsity letterman in both baseball and basketball. Many remember John and his brother Charlie playing for Coach Tom Raby in the late 1960s.
A United States Navy veteran, John served as a dental technician and was stationed in San Diego, California, and Jacksonville, Florida. He was a former member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and later attended First Presbyterian Church.
John spent his life working in the construction and carpentry trade. He had a true gift for woodworking and was widely known for his craftsmanship, creativity, and attention to detail. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, spending time on Fontana Lake, and being with friends. In his later years, nothing brought him greater joy than watching his grandsons play sports and cheering them on from the sidelines.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Melissa Boston McClure; his children, Byron McClure (Heather) and Kimberly McClure; and his beloved grandchildren, Miles McClure (Olivia), Max McClure, and Dixie Ramsdell. He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Raby, Sam McClure (Mildred), and Linda Hughes (David); and his in-laws, Al Boston, Kenny Boston, Greg Boston (Donna), Bobby Boston (Virginia), and Ellen Browning (Bobby). He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
John will be remembered for his smile, wit, humor, talents, and the love he carried for his family and friends.
The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, January 20th from 11am-12pm. A service will be held at 12pm with Rev. Betsy Stow officiating. Burial will be in the Addington Cemetery.
