Obituary

John Norman McDonald, 72, of Franklin, NC, went to meet his heavenly Father on February 24, 2024, after a 6 ½ year illness. His earthly journey has ended, and he is now walking with the Lord on the streets of gold.

He was the son of the late Robert and Belda McDonald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Michael McDonald, and sister, Bonna Hagan.

A native of Tampa, FL, John was a graduate of Hillsborough High School, class of 1969. He retired from CSX railroad as a conductor after many years of service. He was a member of Cowee Baptist Church and enjoyed working with the Brotherhood. He was a Mason, Shriner, and member of the Eastern Star. While living in Tampa he was a Rough Rider. He volunteered at the Living Center of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital when his wife was a nurse. An avid fisherman, John was well known for his smoked mullet dip. He never would divulge the recipe.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ruth Ann; son, Robert McDonald (Shawna); daughter in law, Tori McDonald; step daughters, Ashley Sweet, Jamie Moore (Carnell); step son, Stuart Miller (Stephanie); brother, Robert "Butch" McDonald (Karen); brother in law, Raymond Mehaffey (Ann); ten grandchildren, Kenny, Kelsey, Kaylynn, Ayla, Raygan, Cross, Brilee, Tanner, Ian, Owen; five great grandchildren, MacKenzie, Jemma, Elijah, Brayden, and Ava. He will be greatly missed by all.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, March 1, 2024, at 1pm at Cowee Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Jason Smith will officiate.
