John Farnham Henning, Sr age 77, died on April 11, 2026, following a long decline. He was born October 6, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland, middle of three sons born to Dr. Emil H. Henning, Jr. and Ruth Farnham Henning. The family moved to Sylva in 1962 where Dr. Henning practiced medicine. John graduated from Sylva Webster High School in 1966 and Western Carolina in 1970. He was a member of Kappa Alpha and served as student body president in 1969-70. His J.D. in law from UNC-CH led to a 42-year law practice in Franklin, NC.

John loved UNC-CH basketball, golf, and the beach. He served on the B.S. Eagle Scout Review Board and coached community league basketball and FHS girls' basketball for several years. He served as an elder at Grace Presbyterian and Cornerstone Presbyterian and as Moderator of Presbytery of the Southeast in 2011.

He is survived by his wife, Julie, sons, John F. Henning, Jr (Amber), Lee H. Henning (Brandy), step-daughter, Alison Titherington (Jeff), grandchildren: Jacob, Eli, Ben, Caleb, Isaac, Daniel, Anna, Abi Titherington, Jacob Highes, Holly, Harrison, Lucy Henning, sister-in-law Mary Lou Henning and nephew, Brian.

John was preceded in death by his parents and in 2024 his brothers Emil H. Henning, III and Robin K. Henning.

John was blessed by the care of Franklin Family Practice, Care Partners, Four Seasons Palliative and Hospice care, and by the most excellent care of Elizabeth House.

A Piano Concert in Memory of John will be held at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church on April 18, 2026, at 2:00, conducted by Pastor Tommy Jordan. Greetings to the family to follow.
