Obituary

Cashiers, NC: Joan Gibson Berryhill, who passed from this life on August 31, 2021, truly made the most of the 83 years she was given. Joan was a beautiful, caring person, who was loved and admired by all who knew her. Her love for her family and her kindnesses that also extended to her many friends are just part of the legacy she leaves behind. Joan had an undergraduate degree in education and a masters degree in English from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was there she met the love of her life, Bruce, on a blind date during their junior year. There, too, she had the wonderful opportunity to hear the great poet, Robert Frost, read his poetry. Joan loved art and music. She was an accomplished pianist who enjoyed many different musical genres. Always well kept and well dressed, Joan also was the perfect hostess who knew just how to make her guests feel right at home. She loved to cook, especially during the holidays. Christmas was special to her, and she managed to make it special for her friends and family. Just about every Christmas Joan would prepare a meal for around 100-150 family and friends. Flowers were also one of Joan's passions. She loved, loved, loved flowers, the more the better and the bigger the better. Joan raised roses in her gardens at her home in Charlotte, NC, and dahlias at her home in Cashiers, NC. She loved sharing her flowers and was known for gifting her friends with flowers from her gardens. During her lifetime, Joan and Bruce had many opportunities to travel the world, visiting every continent. She loved seeing new places and having new adventures, but settled on Northern Italy and especially Florence as her favorite place other than her home, naming France as her second choice. Joan also loved the beach and the ocean and helped make many happy family memories at their home at Sea Island, Georgia. Joan's faith was very important to her. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Highlands and Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte where she was active in Women of the Church. Joan was born on February 25, 1938, to James Robert and Amanda Charm Waldroup Gibson. She is survived by her husband, Bruce H. Berryhill, MD; her daughters, Janie Busbee (Brandon) of Nashville, Tennessee, and Julie Berryhill of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; her grandson, Britton Busbee, whom she absolutely adored; and her brother, James Robert Gibson, Jr., DDS (Elizabeth) of Monroe, NC. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Jerry Gibson. A private family memorial will be held soon along with a public Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to mothertomother.org or by mail: Mother to Mother, 11 Warwick Lane, Nashville, TN, 37205. Moffitt Family Funeral Care is honored to serve Mrs. Berryhill's family.
