Obituary

Jean Bragg Wallace, age 93, of Highlands, North Carolina, went to her heavenly home on Friday, December 12, 2025. Jean was treasured by her friends and family for her generous, caring heart, her sweet spirit, and the genuine interest, love and encouragement which she offered joyfully to others.

A faithful Christian from childhood and throughout her life, Jean loved children and taught elementary school and Sunday School for many years. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, and a wife of 47 years to her husband, Rev. James G. Wallace, Jr., who preceded her in death on April 20, 2011. A talented vocalist, she shared her musical gift throughout her lifetime, offering praise to her Savior and ministering within the local church.

Born April 17, 1932 to Hilary Arthur and Hattie Bragg, Jean was one of five siblings and a native of Portsmouth, VA. A member of the Craddock High School class of 1949, Jean was an alum of Truett McConnell Junior College in Cleveland, Georgia, where she participated in the chorus and the college trio, as well as serving in student government and as editor of the “Trunell Trumpet.” She furthered her education at Old Dominion College and became a public school teacher in the Portsmouth area, eventually earning her Bachelor’s Degree in education from West Georgia College.

On August 11, 1963, Jean married James Wallace, her former classmate from Truett McConnell, and embarked on a partnership in ministry and in life. The couple was instrumental in building several Christian schools and founding or pastoring several independent Baptist Churches in Virginia and in Georgia. After she was widowed, she became a long-time member of Douglasville Baptist Temple in Douglasville, GA, where she held dear many sweet friendships. At the time of her passing, Jean was a member of Cashiers Baptist Church in Cashiers, North Carolina.

Jean’s relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ was the most important aspect of her life, and she met Him daily in the scriptures and in prayer. She never missed an opportunity to share her love for and joy in her family, who can truly “rise up and call her blessed” as an example of the Proverbs 31 woman. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her sister Phyllis Nyborg, her brother Braxton Bragg, and her grandson David Wallace. She is survived by her daughters, Joy Rowland and Jennifer Hamlin, her son, Tim Wallace, and son-in-law, Pete Hamlin; sisters, Joyce Costa of Newark, NJ, and Mary Ellen Johnson of Portsmouth, VA; sisters-in-law, Peggy Bragg, Judy Faulk, Ruth Walker, Louise McMichen and Ethelene Brown; brother-in-law George Wallace; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at Douglasville Baptist Temple at a date to be announced, and interment will be at Mozley Memorial Gardens in Lithia Springs, GA.
