Obituary

Jean Clarke Davis, 84, of Franklin, North Carolina, passed away in her home, on June 24, 2026. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, to Richard and Florence Clarke, Jean was raised in Winter Park, FL where she attended Winter Park High School and Florida Presbyterian College.

A lifelong educator, Jean earned her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Jacksonville University. She devoted 42 years to teaching elementary school, shaping generations of students at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Day School in Jacksonville, Florida, and eventually retired from Macon County Schools of Franklin, North Carolina.

Jean’s dedication to young people extended well beyond the school year. She served for many summers as Program Director at Camp Green Cove. She also taught Sunday School at Cowee Baptist Church, sharing her faith with the same warmth and steadiness that defined every part of her life.

Jean lived her faith through action. She was deeply committed to mission work, participating in service trips both locally and abroad. Whether helping neighbors in her own community or traveling to support those in need elsewhere, Jean approached every mission with compassion, and a genuine desire to make life better for others.

Jean married Vernon Davis, the love of her life, and together they shared 32 years of partnership, laughter, and purpose. In retirement, Jean and Vern spent much of their time traveling, volunteering, and helping others throughout their community. Jean loved to work on the home that Vern built for her and they enjoyed gardening together.

Jean is survived by her husband, Vernon Davis, and her six children — Kirk, Liz, Missy, Clarke, Ryder, and Amelia. She was a proud grandmother to eleven grandchildren: Dalton, Zach, Jared, Noah, Alyssa, Tyler, Savannah, Caden, Anna, Kirk, and Camden, all of whom cherished their time with her in the mountains of North Carolina.

Jean’s legacy lives on in the thousands of lives she touched — students, campers, church families, neighbors, friends, and, most of all, the family she loved so deeply. Her gentle guidance, steadfast faith, and generous heart will continue to shine through the people and places she shaped throughout her life.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 28th at 4:30 p.m. at Cowee Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Jean Davis to Cowee Baptist Church for the Honduras Sparrow School or the Student Mission Trip Scholarship Fund.
