Obituary

James E. Douglass, was born in November 1928 and passed away on May 12, 2025, at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina. He was 96 years old at the time of his death.

Born to the late Bernard A. Douglass and Nelia Stewart Douglass of Bessemer, Alabama. James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret B. Douglass, and his two brothers Stuart A. Douglass and Bernard A. Douglass Jr.

He is survived by two sons: Richard B. Douglass and his wife, Victoria K. Douglass, of Franklin, and Gregory S. Douglass and his wife, Linda R. Douglass, also of Franklin

James was the proud grandfather to: Eric J. Douglass, Jason E. Douglass and his wife Faith N. Douglass, and Leanne F. D. Raasch and her husband, Michael L. Raasch.

He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Ashlynn J. Douglass, Eric R. W. Douglass (and his wife Cassandra W. Douglass), Tierney M. McFeely, Ethan B. McFeely, Ivan E. Douglass and Morgan V. Douglass-mother of his two great-great-grandchildren: Easton J. Tyler and Ella R. Tyler

James, lovingly known as 'Pop' to his family (and Jim tohis friends), will be remembered with love. He attended Auburn University in Alabama and after graduating joined the United States Army. He served during the time of the Korean War and was stationed in Germany, where he met his future wife Margaret, a school teacher, in Bamberg, Germany. They were married upon returning to the United States and he attended Michigan State University where he received an advanced degree in forestry. He, Margaret and their two young sons moved to Franklin, NC in 1962 where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in Otto, North Carolina. .James went on to build a 30-year career with the U.S. Forest Service and during this time he furthered his education at Clemson University and the University of Georga. For the final 20 years of his career with the Forest Service he served as the Project Leader of the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. James was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served in various roles throughout the years.

James was a devoted and generous man, always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends and family. Deeply family-oriented, he gave his love, wisdom, kindness, and support freely and without hesitation. Pop will be profoundly missed. The deep love we hold for him will live on in our hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at at a later date.
