LTC Harold "Gene" Kirk, USAF, Ret., age 83, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
Gene was born in Mattoon, Illinois to the late Orion Lloyd Kirk and Rosella Roby Kirk. He traveled throughout Illinois alongside his parents and siblings as they sang for countless audiences. His natural aptitude for music could be witnessed in his ability to whistle or hum any song he came across.
Entering the United States Air Force after becoming a CRNA (nurse anesthetist), Gene served his country in a career that would span 20 years where he received numerous meritorious commendations for his service as a medical service specialist.
Gene loved to be outdoors- whether it was in a boat or on a golf course. He also had a knack for identifying species of birds and types of trees.
He will be remembered for never being without his four legged canine companions; for his gentle, quiet spirit; and for his ability to command others' attention when he spoke.
Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy Kirk; four children, Tracy Kaster (Mark), Mike Kirk (Debbie), Brian Kirk (Kelli), and Beth Payseur (Ty); brothers and sister, Bill Kirk, Rosalie Waskow, Jim Kirk, John Kirk, and Garrett Kirk; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Gene's life will take place at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 28, 2024 in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
