Obituary

Glynda Johnson, affectionately known as "gg" to her family, passed away on December 16, 2024 from complications resulting from bile duct cancer. Born in Raleigh, NC to Joyce Huggins Kinsland and the late Cecil Roy Kinsland, Glynda was raised in Knightdale, NC. She received a bachelor's degree from East Carolina University and a master's degree from The University of Southern Mississippi. Glynda spent her career as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist. In 1975, she married Michael David Johnson, a career naval officer. She expertly managed each move as the family was transferred from Virginia, to California, to Rhode Island, to South Carolina, to Mississippi, and then back to Virginia. As a sign hanging in her kitchen said, "Home is where the Navy sends you."

Glynda and Michael were eventually able to build their dream home in her beloved mountains outside of Franklin, NC, where her parents grew up. Glynda was an accomplished pianist, playing for several local churches and with the Mountain Voices Community Choir. She excelled at arts and crafts, winning blue ribbons in both quilting and artistic wood burning at the North Carolina State Fair. Her wood burned walking sticks were a prized gift. A woman of deep faith, Glynda was a member of Cowee Baptist Church in Franklin, where she played piano, sang in the choir, and played in the bell choir.

Glynda is survived by her mother, Joyce, sister, Ann Kinsland Ayers (Stan), husband, Michael, son, Matthew Kinsland Johnson (Clare), daughter, Kathryn Ann Rifenbark (William), and grandchildren McCall Conway Johnson, Kinsland Clare Johnson, Wake Kathryn Johnson, Benjamin David Rifenbark and Luke Thomas Rifenbark. She is also survived by beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and other family and friends.

A visitation will be held at Cowee Baptist Church on Saturday, December 21 at 1PM, followed by funeral services at 2PM, with the Rev. Jason Smith presiding. A graveside service will follow at Burningtown Baptist Church in Franklin. The family appreciates the expert care provided by the staff of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the Duke University Hospital Department of Oncology in Durham, and Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the North Carolina Baptist Children's Home.
