Glenn E. Hill, 92, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Franklin, NC, at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary A Spayth Hill.
He was born on March 6, 1932, in McCutchenville, Ohio, to Harley and Della Rose Hill. He is preceded in death by his sister Ardis hill, and brothers, Kenneth (Thelma), Keith (Barb), Alvie (Thelma), Russell (Marg), and Alton (Mary) Hill.
Glenn graduated from McCutchenville High School in 1950, where he played basketball and baseball. He was a member of the 1949 Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame baseball team of McCutchenville, where he pitched for three years. In 1951 he was drafted by the Army and served as an artillery surveyor until 1953 in the Korean War. On October 4, 1953, Glenn followed through on a proposal he made in kindergarten to marry Mary A. Spayth. This enduring love lasted their entire life. The couple co-owned and operated Spayth's, a retail store, in Findlay, Ohio for 50 years.
Glenn built all three homes they lived in and was a carpenter of grandfather clocks, cabinets, furniture, etc. He also worked with the Findlay Youth Baseball league for ten years and loved to golf with his many friends. He and Mary were part of a couple's group that included 16 couples who did everything together for 42 years and became life-long friends. The Pittsburg Steelers, OSU Buckeyes, and the Atlanta Braves were his favorites, and he rarely missed a game. Hunting was also an annual event, as he did so every fall for over fifty years.
Glenn and Mary built a vacation home on Mill Creek golf course in Franklin, NC in 1987 and moved there permanently in 2005. Their back yard was along the green which allowed Glenn to not only golf every day but watch other golfers that played the course until he could no longer do so in recent years. But he continued to cruise in his golf cart and cheer others on.
Glenn was an amazing father to his daughter, Connie L Gillenwater (Bill), and son, Tom E Hill (Elizabeth). He is also survived by grandchildren Elizabeth M. Durant, Rebecca L. Fox (Matthew), Cassandra R Rice (Michael); great grandchildren, Angelina, Christopher, Alexander Durant, Hendrix and Lillian Fox; sisters-in-law, Majorie Tate (Skip), Margaret Niswander (James), as well as many nieces, nephews, and their families.
A celebration of life will be held at Mill Creek Gold Course in the clubhouse, on Saturday May 11, 2024, at 10:00am. Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Findlay, Ohio, on Saturday, May 18, 2024, 10-11am visitation, 11 am service and a luncheon in the fellowship hall immediately following.
