Obituary

George Thomas Sherrill passed peacefully on January 2, 2026. He was born on July 2, 1947 in Clayton, Georgia. Raised mostly in Macon County, he was preceded in death by his parents, B. L. “Buck” Sherrill and Florence Stalkup Sherrill.

George majored in Philosophy and Keyboard Performance at St. Andrews and attended graduate school at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. Later, he worked as the writer for the President of the University of California system, as well as at Halliburton in Utah, and as an administrative assistant at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

George drew his inspiration for living a life of compassion, intelligence, faith and integrity from his parents, and from Father Rufus Morgan at the Episcopal Church in Frankin. Like Dr. Morgan, George loved nature, and enjoyed the beauty of California and Utah, but the mountains of North Carolina were always his beloved home, and he was an expert in landscape architecture and horticulture. He also had a remarkable intellectual curiosity, and read widely on history, art, literature and architecture. In addition to his “blood” family, he loved his family of choice, including his dear goddaughters and many friends. He enriched the lives of so many fortunate to be in his orbi with his good nature, extensive knowledge, and sharp wit.

No services are planned. Please honor George with an act of kindness toward someone with difficulties as often as you may.
