IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Geneta
Rogers
May 25, 1938 – March 8, 2026
Geneta "Hoppy" Rogers, 87, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
Geneta, affectionately known as "Hoppy," was born in Lowell, N.C., to the late Charlie Roscoe Hopkins and Ruby Coretta Gilreath Hopkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude “Moose” Rogers Jr, sister Wanda Dalrymple, brother Steve Hopkins, sister-in-law Judy Rogers Waldroop, and brother-in-law Jim Clemmer.
Hoppy was a beautiful soul and had a calling to serve the Lord and her community in many impactful ways. She attended Western Carolina University where she played intramural sports including her two favorites, basketball and softball. She also held a national record at WCU for the longest basketball toss. After graduating, she worked at a camp in New Jersey, the Echo Hill Camp, where she served as a counselor for two years, and then served as director for two years. Hoppy served her community as an educator. She personally flew to Chicago to advocate for grants to start the Macon Program for Progress (MPP) in Macon County. In 1966 she started training others for the Head Start program, working alongside Dorothy Crawford and Lucy Pickens. She quickly moved up the ranks where she eventually served as the director of MPP Head-Start for several years. After leaving MPP Head Start, she ran a daycare for the Cartoogechaye community just below her house. Hoppy served as the director of Southwestern Child development as well. She also worked to help other women gain degrees from Madison (Now Southwestern Community College), even though she already had an education degree herself, she attended classes on Fridays with these women, eventually transferring with them to Mars Hill and earning a degree in Early Child Development. She was also a teacher at Nantahala and at Cullasaja schools in Macon County where she taught alongside her husband Moose Rogers. Her educational career demonstrates her calling not only for children’s education but also shows the impact that she had on adult education as well. She was also a member at Cartoogechaye Baptist Church, where she and her husband Moose joined in 1967. Hoppy was a very active member of the church, serving her church family in many ways. At Cartoogechaye Baptist Church, she ran the Vacation Bible School program, helping lead children in her community to Christ. Hoppy taught the Women’s Sunday School class at the church, where she left lasting impacts on many of the women that she taught. She also served as the Church Clerk for many years. Hoppy served on the missions committee, helping reach people beyond her community. One of her most lasting legacies at her church was her involvement in the Women’s Missions Union (WMU), where she helped start the Church’s quilt ministry. Hoppy will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to education, her loving and compassionate spirit, and her strong faith.
She is survived by her two children, Tres Rogers (Jami Waldroop) and Cory Rogers; and her sisters Carolyn Shope (Wade) and Ernestine Clemmer.
Maw Maw’s greatest joy were her six grandchildren, Preston Rogers (Caroline), Hunter Rogers (Cameron Mullinax), Brooklyn Rogers (Blake Randall), Bryce Rogers (Anna), Alexander Rogers (Ashlyn Allen), and Storie Ann Rogers.
