Gary Leon McClure, 63, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on January 16, 2025. Born on January 12, 1962, in Whitley County, KY, he was the son of the late Ellison Leon McClure and survived Shirley Jean Colegrove.
Gary grew up in Kentucky, where he began working in the coal mines at the young age of 17. In his early 20s, he moved to North Carolina, carrying with him a profound passion for heavy equipment.
Gary's exceptional skill in operating heavy equipment had a lasting impact on many lives. His flawless technique and dedication to grading and landscaping set him apart in his field. He channeled his passion and expertise into his own business in Highlands, NC, where he specialized in landscaping and grading.
Even after he was no longer able to work, Gary continued to landscape around his home whenever he could. He found joy in grading the land on his property and spent countless cherished moments on his front porch, enjoying a cold one with friends and family. He was known for his immaculate storytelling and infectious laugh, which brought joy to everyone around him.
Gary was a devoted family man who loved his family deeply, especially his daughter, mother, and all his cousins and family in Kentucky. Gary deeply cherished Sierra Nylund and Tasha Cornatzer, caring for them as if they were his own daughters. He also adored Walker and Truett Speed, treating them like his own grandchildren.
Gary's legacy will be remembered through the many lives he touched and the landscapes he shaped. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Gary is survived by his daughter and her husband; George and Carrie Drummond; his mother and stepfather, Shirley and Larry Colegrove; his uncle and aunt, Richard and Lucille McClure; and his cousin and her husband, Lee and Linda Lindgren.
