Obituary

Evelyn Parris Frizzell Buchanan, age 93, passed away on January 31, 2025. She was born June 26, 1931, to Jeter and Mary Jones Parris in the Addie community of Jackson County and was a lifelong resident of the county. While she grew up in Addie, she lived most of her life in the Little Savannah and, later, Savannah communities. A graduate of Sylva High School, she attended the forerunner of Southwestern Community College.

She was employed by the Buster Brown Apparel / Skyland Textile Company for over four decades beginning with the initial Sylva plant opening in 1953 and the later expanded operation near Dillsboro.

During her first years with the company, she worked in the sewing department. Afterwards, she began a lengthy career in office and secretarial work, notably as supervisor of payroll. She received numerous commendations and recognition for her service and dedication. She would often brave inclement weather, including heavy snows, to get to work in order to make sure employees were paid on time. Also, she often received awards for perfect attendance for never missing a day of work.

She was a member of the Little Savannah Baptist Church, where she was an active and devoted member. Among her contributions, she taught Sunday School and helped assemble a history of the church. Later, she became a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She was an avid reader and avoided television in favor of her novels, newspapers, and literary pursuits. She loved gardening and working outside in her flower beds and would often take her vacation days to attend to her flowers and a meticulous yard care. A lover of birds, she had numerous feeders positioned to allure them to the windows for viewing. She loved cats and adopted several who were drawn to her by instinct. Also, she was known for her cooking skills, especially desserts. Family and friends remember the warmth of her smile and gentle nature that were both genuine and heartfelt.

Evelyn is survived by her son George Frizzell, Jr., husband Billy Ray Buchanan and his children and grandchildren, brother Jack Parris (Alice) sister Joyce Parris Dills, sister-in-law Nell Parris and beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by first husband George Frizzell, Sr., and by her siblings Dorothy (Dot) Parris Southards and Roger Parris.
