On July 28, 2023 Eva J Haller, beloved wife of Fred, passed away peacefully at their home in Holly Springs. Eva was 86 years old.
Eva was born to George and Bertha Mathie in Girard, Ohio on August 24, 1936. Her parents, older brother George, and her son Mark preceded her in death.
Eva and Fred were married in Miami, Florida on October 11, 1972. They first bought property in Franklin in 1978 and moved here permanently when they retired in 1988. Their home is known all over the county as the Christmas House with thousands of lights and festive yard decorations. All of the decorations were handmade by Fred and hand painted by Eva. Eva loved when "Santa's elves" arrived to set up the Christmas display. She made big batches of soup to make sure all the elves stayed nourished and warm.
Eva was a dedicated and accomplished accountant. She applied her passion for meticulous record-keeping professionally for Miami-Dade County and voluntarily for many organizations like the Macon County Senior Games and the Nantahala Hiking Club. She became computer savvy and made the transition from traditional bookkeeping methods to using the computer long after retiring. The AARP Free Tax Prep Service depended on Eva's knowledge and she delivered for many years.
Eva loved playing cards and rarely missed her Thursday afternoon card games. She and Fred were the driving force of the Macon County Senior Games for over 25 years. They volunteered countless hours to organize the events, the local games, the state games in Raleigh, as well as the parties and the banquets. Through the program, they formed lasting friendships that would bring profound joy and enrichment to their lives. The Monday Parties they hosted at their home are remembered fondly by all who attended.
The birdfeeders in their yard are always full of birds. She loved watching and using her bird book to identify the different ones nesting in their trees. Every year a couple of blue birds used the little bird house nailed to the porch to raise their babies. Eva enjoyed the entire nesting season and was a little sad when the baby birds flew away.
She was most happy when her home was crowded with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. Holidays at the Haller's home are very large and festive. Even though the number of mouths to feed at holiday meals is usually more than thirty, Eva made sure every meal was a success and began looking forward to the next holiday even before the current one was over.
Between them, Eva and Fred have nine children, eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Please join Fred and his family in celebrating Eva's life on August 24th between 3pm and 7pm at the Haller's Home at 607 Rabbit Creek Road in Holly Springs. The family is planting a memorial rose garden. In lieu of floral arrangements, the family welcomes your addition to the garden.
