Debra "Debbie" Hall Payne, 63, of Franklin, NC, beloved wife, partner, and friend, is resting peacefully after a life defined by love, grace, and resilience. She passed away Monday, August 10, 2026, surrounded by the comfort of Care Partners Hospice and the unwavering devotion of her husband and full-time caregiver, John.
Debbie was born in Sylva, NC, to Zeb Hall and Amie Brooks Hall. She brought a quiet, gentle kindness and a warm smile that lit up any room. She was a Christian, believing and confessing in the free pardon of sin through her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His sacrifice and was a member of Long View Baptist Church in Franklin, NC.
A 1981 graduate of Franklin High School, Debbie pursued her passion for numbers at Southwestern Community College, graduating with a degree in Accounting. While there, she was recognized as a distinguished member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States.
Debbie built a highly respected career in accounting. She began her professional journey working with George Taylor, CPA, who taught her so much during her entry into the field. She went on to become an Enrolled Agent (EA) and served as the Supervisor of the Tax and Accounting division at Drake Software. Later, she successfully opened and. operated her own independent business, Hall Accounting & Tax Services.
Throughout her life, Debbie found immense joy in the simple, meaningful moments. She loved listening to 80's music, playing video games and board games, solving Sudoku puzzles, doing cross-stitch, and playing the piano.
For over 21 beautiful years, she and John built a life grounded in honesty, honor, and deep love for one another. Even in the quietest days of her illness, the bond they shared remained an anchor of strength and comfort. Her life was a testament to the power of shared devotion.
She Is survived by her devoted husband and full-time caregiver, John H. Payne of the home; her sister, Sandra Cloer of Indian Trail, NC. More than just sisters, Debbie and Sandra were kindred spirits whose lives were woven together by an unbreakable bond of love and friendship. Her brother, Dale Hall of Sylva, NC; and her amazing sister-in-in-law, Sherie Barnett of Murphy, NC, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her special niece, Page Blount, and special nephew, Mark Cloer, both of Indian Trail, NC, whom she deeply loved. Many other loving cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends survive her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Zeb and Amie Hall.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to hospice RNs Tammy, Lisa, Julie, and Sherie, CNA Elizabeth, and Chaplain Marcus for providing compassionate support during her final days.
There will be a private family memorial at a Iater date. In place of flowers, Debbie had requested that donations be made to your favorite charity.
"No matter where life takes me, my heart will only be at home with you. If at some point God decides to take me from you, never fear. I will stand at the gates of heaven watching for you forever."
