Obituary

Cynthia Chambers Berg, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and artist, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, in Highlands, North Carolina, at the age of 86. Born on New Year's Eve in Jefferson City, Missouri, Cynthia was a spark of light from the very beginning — a woman whose joyful spirit, boundless generosity, and unmistakable laugh touched all who knew her.

The daughter of Maurice "Dude" and Mildred "Babe" Chambers, Cynthia grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Webster High School. Her adventurous heart led her to Colorado Women's College and later to San Francisco, where she worked for WCBS and encountered many of the icons of her time. Ultimately, love brought her home — a whirlwind romance with William "Bill" A. Berg led to an engagement within weeks and a lifelong devotion that spanned decades. Together, they raised two children, Bruce and Karen, and built a life filled with love, laughter, and purpose.

Cynthia had a vibrant and expressive soul, finding joy and fulfillment in the arts. After raising her two children, she pursued her passion for painting, becoming an active member of the St. Louis Artists' Guild and later the Highlands Art League. Her creativity was matched only by her warmth; she was known for welcoming friends — old and new — to her summer porch gatherings, where laughter and connection were always in abundance.

Deeply engaged in her communities, Cynthia was a member of the St. Louis Woman's Club and a generous supporter of Operation Food Search. In Highlands, she was a long-time member of Highlands Country Club, served on the board of the Highlands Art League, and was a proud member of Highlands United Methodist Church to which she looked forward to the weekly community dinner. Cynthia also contributed her support and heart to causes dear to her, including St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and the ASPCA.

Cynthia loved to travel and treasured adventures taken with her mother, daughter Karen, and her beloved husband. From the rocky coasts of Maine to the sun-drenched days in Scottsdale and Sarasota, she found joy in every journey. Yet no place meant more to her than Highlands, her cherished mountain town where she moved full time in 2013, and the place she found peace, friendship, and inspiration.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Dubrule, son-in-law Brian, and her four adored grandchildren: Katherine, Joseph, Benjamin, and Elizabeth Dubrule. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, and unconditional love.

A memorial service celebrating Cynthia's life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Highlands United Methodist Church, 315 Main Street, Highlands, NC. Parking is available behind the church on Spring Street. A reception will follow at the church.
