Charles Dwight Southard, 80, of Franklin, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Born in Macon County to the late Roy and Ruth Dills Southard, Dwight lived his entire life rooted in the community he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Raymond Southard.
Dwight was a lifelong and oldest member of Cartoogechaye Baptist Church, a place that shaped his faith and friendships over many decades. He had a deep love for racing, hunting, and fishing—simple joys that reflected his appreciation for the outdoors and the quiet moments it offered.
A logger by trade, he devoted his entire life to the timber industry. He began working alongside his father at the age of 10 and continued his tradition faithfully until this past fall. His work ethic was matched only by his humility. Dwight was a quiet, gentle man who found purpose in helping others, never asking for anything in return.
He is survived by his children, Karen Southard (Billy Cabe) of Raleigh; Chuck Southard (Maggie) of Franklin; and Jonathan Southard (fiancé, Kayla Campbell) of Franklin. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren—Taylor, Payton, Carrie, Carly, Allison, and Krislyn—and great‑grandchildren, Charlotte and Tye. He is also survived by his siblings, Tim Southard (Ruby) of Franklin and Linda Austin of Ohio, along with several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 17th, at Woodlawn Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Randy Campbell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made by buying a meal for someone or lending a helping hand—simple acts of kindness that honor the way Dwight lived his life.
