Bennie Lewis McConnell, age 69, passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, following a courageous and long-fought battle with cancer. Bennie was born on February 21, 1955, to Thurman "Bud" McConnell and Georgia Farmer McConnell of Franklin, NC.
After graduating from Franklin high School, Bennie began working for Burlington Industries, prior to enlisting in the military, serving as a member of the National Guard. Following his service, he worked at Fruit of the Loom and Hanes, later beginning a career at Harrah's Cherokee Casino as a card dealer, taking great pride in self-sufficiency. Bennie was also a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, finding comfort in the community provided by fellow members.
Above all else, Bennie valued his connections with friends and family, making a lasting impact on those lucky enough to meet him. As an avid sports lover, particularly racing, Bennie enjoyed watching sporting events with friends and family. He was a father, grandfather, and friend, dedicating his life to those he loved. Bennie was relentless in his selflessness, never failing to provide humor, support, and care. Bennie's greatest joy was found in the relationships he created and the experiences he was able to share with those closest to him. These experiences are forever cherished as we continue to remember and honor him. Through Bennie, many had the privilege of experiencing unconditional love, wisdom, and friendship, as these are deeds he readily offered to all. A hard worker, kind soul, and giver, Bennie's friends and family are proud to continue and embody his legacy of love and bravery.
Bennie is survived by his sister, Linda Higdon and her husband Bill of Franklin, as well as his daughter, Megan Riester and her husband Cliff of Waynesville. He is also survived by his grandsons, Ben Roberts and Max Riester; and his granddaughter Anna Riester. Blessed with many loved ones, Bennie is further survived by his cousins, Wade "Worm" McConnell and his wife Dola, Carolyn Bateman, along with Gerald "Dee" McConnell and his wife Susie.
The family will receive friends Friday, August 16th from 4-6 pm at Macon Funeral Home and a private burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who feel inclined donate to the Brotherhood of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
