Obituary

Anne Fowler Chance, a longtime resident of Augusta and Atlanta and beloved mother to Stephen Roberts Chance, Michael Allen Chance, and Allison Chance Carter, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2025, at the age of 82 in Highlands, North Carolina. Born Myrtle Anne Fowler, Anne was born in Newberry, South Carolina on August 17, 1942. An only child, Anne was blessed with a loving and devoted relationship with both her father and mother, Steadman Allen Fowler and Grace Myrtle Bedenbaugh. Anne's childhood gave her a faith filled, grounded foundation and commitment to her family that she carried with her throughout life.

Anne graduated from Greenwood High School in Greenwood, South Carolina, and then attended Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina. She was a liked and respected classmate at both institutions, and Anne was well-known for her beauty and quick wit. Anne then began her long career as a legal secretary in Columbia, South Carolina. During that time, she met the love of her life, attorney Kenneth Roberts Chance.

Anne married Ken on January 21, 1967, and they enjoyed a long marriage and raised their children in Anne's beloved Augusta, Georgia. Anne was quick to find a reason to celebrate and gather her friends and loved ones, whether that be for a child's birthday, a special holiday, or the Masters. While Ken and Anne later divorced, Anne's love of and devotion to Ken endured until his death on July 15, 1995. Even following their divorce and prior to Ken's death, Anne served dutifully and graciously as his legal secretary, confidant, and friend. Besides Ken, Anne also served as the legal secretary for other prominent attorneys in Augusta. To be closer to her grandchildren, in her later years Anne relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where she continued her work in the legal industry as a legal assistant and receptionist for Watkins, Lourie, Roll & Chance, PC until her retirement. She much enjoyed her years there and the special friendships she made with her work team.

Anne is survived by daughter Allison Chance Carter (Jim), sons Stephen Roberts Chance and Michael Allen Chance, as well as grandson James Walter ("Jack") Carter, III and granddaughters Blair Banks Carter, Madison Elizabeth Chance, and Anna Grace Chance. Anne was predeceased by grandson Patrick Roberts Chance. Anne also leaves countless friends who will fondly remember her vibrant spirit and tenacious attitude. Anne was a force of nature who carried courage and dignity through all the events of her life, never losing her sense of humor or gratitude.

A graveside internment service will be held on June 14, 2025, at 11am, at Westover Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia followed by a reception at The Wallace House, Augusta Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Press On Fund of the CSRA Community Foundation, 720 St. Sebastian Way, Suite 160, Augusta, GA 30901 (www.pressonfund.org). Anne's beloved grandson, Patrick, died on his ninth birthday after a five-year battle with pediatric cancer. The mission of Press On is to discover more effective, less toxic, and potentially curable treatments for childhood cancer in our lifetime. Anne was a steadfast supporter of Patrick, and now Press On, in both life and death, and she embodied the commitment to living life with courage, tenacity, and grace.

The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Eckerd Living Center in Highlands, North Carolina for their thoughtful care and affection of Anne during her five-year residence there prior to her death. Due to that gratitude, the family please requests that donations may also be made in Anne's memory to Eckerd Living Center, 250 Hospital Drive, Highlands, NC 28741.
