Obituary for Wayne Proffitt

Wayne  Proffitt
Wayne Proffitt, 80, of Franklin, passed away Monday, December 29, 2008.
Born in Yancey Co, NC, he was the son of the late Leslie Proffitt and Vina Hill Proffitt. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen King Proffitt who passed away June 29, 2008. Wayne graduated from Berea College and received his B.S. in Agricultural Education. He served as a director of the Macon County Fair for 55 years; a number of those years he was secretary treasurer. He was a Vocational Agricultural Teacher and retired after 44 years teaching at Franklin High School. Wayne was a member of the NCVATA Association and served as secretary treasurer of the Widow’s Fund. In 2007, the Macon County fair grounds were re-named “Wayne Proffitt Agricultural Center” in his honor. He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award and the American Farmer Degree. He was a member of First Methodist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Gail Young and husband Richard of Franklin and Janet Waddell and husband David of Asheville, NC; three grandchildren, Brittany Waddell of Raleigh, Michelle Green and husband Steve and Michael Young and wife Tamara all of Franklin; two great grandchildren, Anna Green and Kevyn Young; brother, Eddie Proffitt and wife Linda of Burnsville, NC; sister, Louise Hughes and husband Max of Burnsville, NC and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at First Methodist Church. Dr. John Fowler and Rev. Marti Hatch will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at Macon Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Steve Green, Michael Young, Lewis Penland, Ronnie Vinson, Emory Crawford and Marcie Estes Jones.
Current and past FFA students, NC Agricultural Teachers and Macon County Fair Board of Directors Members will all serve as honorary pallbearers.
