Obituary for Verlon Edward Swafford

Verlon Edward  Swafford
Verlon Edward Swafford, 90, of Franklin, passed away Friday, November 30, 2007.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late James H. Swafford and Eller Crawford Swafford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Bennett Swafford who died May 25, 2005; brothers, Paul, Harvey, Carl and Clifton and a sister, Bessie Blevins. Verlon was a US Navy veteran of WWII; graduate of Blanton Business School; member of the Franklin First Baptist Church, served as deacon, trustee and Sunday School Teacher many years; chairman of Macon County Commissioners; director of Bank of Franklin and First Union National Bank; chairman of the Board - Angel Community Hospital; president of Franklin Chamber of Commerce; served as chair of the Southwestern NC Planning and Economic Development Commission; chaired the NC Medical Care Commission; charter member of the Franklin Lions Club; sixty year member of Junaluskee Lodge No. 145; board of directors of Macon County Fair Association; and owner of Western Auto Store for 34 years.

He is survived by son, Ben Swafford and wife Jean of Franklin; grandsons, Joel and wife Kristy of Franklin and Landon and wife Brook of Curlew, WA; great grandsons, Turner and Bennett of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, December 3, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Dusek and Rev. Robert Dryman will officiate. Burial will be in the Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Monday, prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Charles Swafford, Lester Swafford, Ronnie Campbell, W.C. "Sonny" Burrell, Pete Penland and James U. "Jud" Downs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Angel Medical Center Foundation, C/O Bea Sanford, 120 Riverview Street, Franklin, NC 28734 or Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Cynthia Rowland, 886 Younce Creek Rd, Franklin, NC 28734.
