Obituary for The Rev. Henry I. Burton

The Rev. Henry I. Burton, 79, died Thursday, February 1, 2007, in Franklin, NC. Born in Ashland, KY, on December 1, 1927, to Guy and Lelia Burton, he served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea and then attended William Jewell College, Liberty, MO, where he pledged the Sigma Nu fraternity, graduating in 1950. He attended the Episcopal Theological School in Lexington, Kentucky, receiving his Bachelor's of Divinity in 1957. He was ordained deacon on June 15, 1956, and ordained priest on June 14, 1957, by Bishop Moody. He served as curate at Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, KY, 1956-1957; vicar at St. Philips Episcopal Church, Harrodsburg, KY, 1957-1959; curate at Christ Church Episcopal, San Antonio, TX, 1959-1968, where he was also chaplain to St. Mary's Hall, 1959-1961; Rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Lincoln, NE, 1968-1984; and Rector of St. Agnes Episcopal Church, Franklin, NC, 1985 until his retirement in 1992.

He is survived by his son, John Burton, Denver, CO; his daughter and granddaughter, Laura M. and Laura A. Franz, Lincoln, NE; his nieces, Lelia Margaret Stone, Austin, TX, Martha Stone, Boulder, CO, and Ann Marie Stone, Houston, TX; and his sister, Helen Anne Stephens, Hickory, NC.

A memorial service will be held at St. Agnes Church, Franklin, NC, on Saturday, February
17, 2007, at 2 pm, with The Right Reverend G. Porter Taylor, Bishop of the Diocese of
Western North Carolina, officiating.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Agnes Church, 66 Church Street,
Franklin, NC 28734, or to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza,
Suite 1400, New York, NY 10122.
