Obituary for Robert L. Penland
Robert L. Penland, 90, of Hickory, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 4, 2009.
Bob was born February 8, 1918, in Shooting Creek, NC, to the late Jack and Omie Penland. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Earl Penland, Farrell Penland, Hazel Anderson and Maymie Davis. He met his wife, Helen McAlister of Sherman, TX, in Washington, DC. She was the love of his life and they married in 1939. Bob served in the US Army during WWII and was honorably discharged. He and Helen raised their family in Coral Gables, FL, where Bob started Hill York Co. then later, CoolCraft Corp. He retired in 1972 and moved back to the Smokey Mountains, where he would enjoy 35 years of retirement. Bob was a good and unfailing likeable man. He was a man of faith; an affectionate and devoted husband and a loving and supportive father. He had deeply inherent qualities of warmth, humor and considerations for others. He enjoyed the outdoors and golfing.
Bob is survived by his wife Helen of 69 years; daughters, Pamela L. Goldsmith and husband Fred of Hickory, NC and Penny L. Ross and husband Bill of League City, TX; grandchildren, Kimberly McDaniel and husband Joel and Robin Park and husband Clint; great-grandchildren, Kayla and Kinsey McDaniel and Gavin and Abby Paige Park; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Holly Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Hugh Holleman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
