Obituary for Robert Donald "Bob" Merrill
Robert Donald “Bob” Merrill, 83, longtime resident of Franklin, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Angel Medical Center.
Born on July 4, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, Bob was the youngest of four children born to Margaret and Frank Merrill. After graduating from Cooley High School in Detroit, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1944. After his time in service, he married Kay Enlow. They had two sons, Robert Jr. and David Merrill. Bob was an Engineer for Ford Motor Company for 32 years in Dearborn, Michigan and retired in 1981. He was a lifetime member of Garden City Masonic Builders Lodge #587 F & M in Garden City, Michigan. Bob was active in the community and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He worked with his wife, Betty, volunteering at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, the Scottish Tartans Museum, Pickin’ on the Square, The Taste of Scotland, Pumpkin Fest and other special events in the community. He loved volunteering at the Chamber of Commerce until his health prevented him from working at the visitor’s information desk.
In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his son, Robert Jr.; two sisters, Betty and Margaret and his brother, William. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Betty Pitchford Merrill; son, David and two step-sons, Charles Rayside and wife Karen and William Rayside and wife Martha; five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Bob Abel will officiate.
