Obituary for Mary A. Oliver

Mary A. Oliver, 96, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010.

Born March 27, 1913 in Gouveia, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Julius Oliver and Amelia Coelho Oliver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Rebello; brother in law, Manuel; a brother, Anthony Oliver and nephew, Mario Rebello. At the age of four Mary’s family moved from Portugal to Stonington, CN where she attended Stonington Borough School. She left at the age of sixteen to care for her invalid mother and sick father. She went to work at Atwood Machine Company in 1942 and remained with the new companies that took over. Before retiring in 1973 she worked for Universal, Plax and ended her career working for Monsato. Mary was active in rolling bandages for the Red Cross during the war and volunteered many years at Red Cross Blood Drives. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, past member of Portuguese Holy Auxilary and member of the Nina Circle Daughters of Isabella from 1947. She was a member of Saint Mary’s Church; a member of the choir and member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Mary loved to bowl and did so until she was 87 years old. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends she so dearly loved.

She is survived by special nieces and nephews, Mary and Robert Smith of Franklin and Betty and Charlie Fellows and family of Stonington, CT; great nephew, Robert Smith Jr. and wife Wendy; Judy Rebello and family and several more nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at St. Mary’s in Stonington, CT.

The family will receive friends the night prior to the service at St. Mary’s.
