Martha "Mattie" Pearle Cunningham Shields, 94, of Franklin, NC, passed away at Angel Medical Center after a brief illness on Thursday, October 19, 2006.

A lifelong resident of Macon County, she was a daughter of the late George Cunningham and Emma Rebecca Jacobs Cunningham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Julia, Bertha, Nannie, Eunice and Bess and brothers, Newton, Perry and Fred. Mattie taught for the Macon County Schools for 41 years. She was a former member of Eastern Star Nequassa Chapter No. 43; member of the Retired Teachers Association; life long member of Franklin First Presbyterian Church and was a volunteer for Angel Medical Center.

She is survived by three children, Buster Shields and wife Brandon of Franklin, Newton Shields and wife Sherry of Candler and Julia Ann Bradley and husband Ronald of Asheville; seven grandchildren, Henry Shields, Andy Shields, Allan Shields, Heather Shields, Angela Shields, Wesley Shields and Stephanie Bradley; six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Tony and Rita Esterwood and family.

Funeral Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, October 22, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Bob Abel and Father Wes Shields will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Andy Shields, Allan Shields, Henry Shields, Daniel Shields, Stephen Apel and Mark Apel.

Flowers accepted and appreciated or memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
