Obituary for Lee R. Byrd

Lee Byrd, 94, of Otto, NC went to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 27. He had been receiving excellent care at Britthaven of Franklin, NC for about six months.

He was born July 29,1913 in Sevier, McDowell County, NC to David Roe and Minnie Hollifield Byrd. He married his childhood sweetheart Dolly Marie Byrd, a loving wife and mother to Wayne, who preceded him in death in 1969. He later married Elizabeth Smith Jackson with whom he spent many happy years until her death September 25, just two days prior to his. Lee was also preceded by eleven of his twelve siblings.

Lee was a member of Newman Chapel Baptist Church where he had many friends.
He & Liz enjoyed square dancing together into their eighties. Several years of coming to the area for square dance clinics rekindled their love for the mountains. They bought their “Byrd’s Nest” in Otto in 1981 and spent many hours entertaining guests on the front porch and at their dining table. Prior to moving back to North Carolina, Lee was a builder in south Florida for thirty years.

Lee is survived by his sister Mary & Bill Faw of Old Fort, NC, his son and daughter in law Wayne & Genene Byrd of Otto, NC; three step-children; Eugenia Jackson of San Francisco, CA; Virginia Jackson of Seattle, WA; John S and Marguerite Jackson of Orlando, FL. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Eric & Rebekah Byrd, Laurel & Jonathan Smith, Lee Burns of Pensacola, FL, Brett & Lena Burns of Chipley, FL, Jake & Michelle Jackson, Hank & Leila Jackson, and Alina & Georg Hoehn. He had fifteen great grand-children, many nieces & nephews and a multitude of loving friends.

At his request, Lee will be cremated and buried beside Liz and their pets.

A memorial service for Lee and Liz will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Newman Chapel Baptist Church.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
