Obituary for John "Chuck" Charles Richardson

John "Chuck" Charles  Richardson
Chuck Richardson passed away on Tuesday, August 21st at Solace Hospice in Asheville, NC. A longtime resident of Franklin, he was 84 years old.

Born John Charles Henry Richardson on March 10, 1923 in Flint, Michigan, Chuck was the eldest of four children born to Violet and Charles Henry Richardson. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan and in 1942 enlisted in the Marine Corps.

He was a Paratrooper in the 1st Marine Division and participated in four beach heads and raids on enemy fortification during late 1942 and 1943. He received thirteen battle wounds during these campaigns, the most grievous on Iwo Jima. It was during the battle of Iwo Jima that Chuck would earn the title "The Ultimate Warrior."

Chuck’s military decorations include the Presidential Unit Citation, The Purple Heart with Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbon and the Marine Good Conduct Medal.

After returning home, he married Joan M. Dunham of Detroit, MI in 1946. Together they had four children, John Scott, Ross, Jane and Pam and made their home in Pontiac, Michigan. Chuck worked at Chrysler Corporation for 35 years, beginning as a test mechanic and eventually working his way up to an engineering position. He retired in 1984.

He and his wife Joan divorced in 1974 and he married June Hopper in 1982. They were together for 25 years before June passed away in January, 2007.

Chuck and June retired to Franklin in 1984 and bought one of the first houses in Mill Creek. Both active members of the community, Chuck was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church and served as chairman of the local Toys for Tots committee. In addition he volunteered for the Manna Food Bank, REACH and other local charities. An avid golfer and lifelong Republican, Chuck was a man of high Christian faith, who in life was kind-hearted, generous and quick-witted.

Chuck is pre-deceased by his son Ross and his sisters Janet and Joan. He is survived by his sister Marie and brother Jim, his three children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and his friends.

Services will be held at Macon Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26th. We will Receive Friends at Macon Funeral Home from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 25th.
