Obituary

James Dennis Petersen, Sr., 78, of Franklin, NC, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 6, 2020.

The son of the late Donald Wayne Petersen and Mildred Louise (Robinson) Petersen, he was born April 4, 1942, and reared in Waterloo, Iowa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David Wayne Petersen.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, confidant and best friend of 56 years, Lana Carol (Woodbury) Petersen. Other surviving family members are his sister, Donna Jean (Petersen) of Tehachapi, CA; his daughter, Carla Christine (Petersen) Sankuer and husband Fredrick Sankuer, of Florence, SC; and his son, James Dennis Petersen, Jr., and wife Donna Renee (Anders) Petersen of Brevard, NC; five grandchildren, Ashton Brooke Streett, Lauren Noel Sankuer and Fredrick Lane Sankuer of Florence, SC; Grayson James Petersen and Andrew Mitchell Petersen of Brevard, NC; and four nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Bob Jones Academy in Greenville, SC, Jim earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with minors in English, Accounting and Business Management at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. He spent fifteen years in management with JCPenney before teaching six years at Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, WI. The next 24 years, “Mr. Pete” was principal of four Christian schools in North and South Carolina, retiring from Victory Christian School in Sylva, NC. He also taught high school English, Math and Computer Applications.

Jim Trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior May 28, 1967, and became a born-again Christian. He understood that he could not continue putting the Lord off according to Proverbs 29:1, “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”
Mr. Pete was personally involved in the ministry of churches as a deacon, song leader, choir director, special music provider and Sunday school teacher. A long-time member of Victory Baptist Church in Sylva, NC, he enjoyed teaching the Mature Adult Sunday School class.
Jim always enjoyed spending time with his family, taking road trips, listening to reasonable music and watching sporting events.

The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 PM, Sunday, July 12th at Victory Baptist Church, 25 Victory Church Road, midway between Franklin and Sylva on US 441. For the protection of all, masks and social distancing will be encouraged.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 PM, Sunday, July 12th at Victory Baptist Church. Pastor Rusty Wolfrey and Rev. Bob Cadenhead will officiate. A graveside service will be held following the funeral at Forest Hill Cemetery in Morganton, NC.

Hey Mr. Pete,
You've been on my mind and heart for a while and I should have listened to God and picked up the phone. I'm sorry I never did. Thank you for always seeing the good in me and sticking up for me. You were a great man and I will miss you greatly. Thank you for never giving up on people, thank you for always seeing the good in others, and thank you most of all for being a light in this dark world.
Love,
Steven Alexander

Carol, James, Carla and family,
My sincerest condolences on the loss of your dear husband and father. Jim was such a kind, gifted educator and had such a heart for students and colleagues. I remember with joy many wonderful events and conversations during our years together at MBBC. So much fun; so much laughter!
May you know the peace and joy of Christ in these days ahead!

Our prayers and sympathy for the passing of Mr Peterson. He was a godly man all the years that we knew him at Southview Christian School as school principal. I can still hear him quote “ Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might”....Ecc 9:10.

Mr. Petersen hired me fresh out of college and gave me the reins to Jr. and sr. high history classes as well as jv & varsity sports teams. He encouraged me with a strong but loving hand, and taught me in ways I find myself imitating sometimes as a school administrator. I'm grateful for his dedication and love for education, the right way, and our Saviour.

I spent years with Mr. Pete at Victory. He was by far one of my favorite teachers, and I enjoyed every minute I spent at the school. Mr. And Mrs. Pete helped me on my Christian journey and their wisdom still follows me to this day. It really does break my heart to hear this news. Many prayers are being sent to the family during this time. I hope you feel surrounded by love and are comforted by the fact that he is celebrating with the Lord now. Thank you Mr. Pete for all you did for me and the students at Victory! You and Mrs. Pete will always hold a special place in my heart.
