Obituary for James Weldon Lanning, Sr.

James Weldon Lanning, Sr., 80, of Rabun Gap, GA, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2007.

Born in Asheville, NC, he was the son of the late Walter E. Lanning and Maude Barnes Lanning. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Holly Lanning who died June 10, 2003 and Theresa Lanning Townsend who died December 11, 2004. James was a U.S. Army World War II veteran; member and elder of Wiley Presbyterian Church, Wiley, GA; member of the Junaluskee Masonic Lodge No. 45; member of the Oasis Shrine Temple; volunteer worker for over 12 years at F.A.I.T.H. Inc. of Rabun County; and was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Sutton Lanning; one son, James W. Lanning, Jr. and beloved daughter-in-law Starlett Lanning of Rabun Gap, GA; one granddaughter, Angela Lanning of Franklin; six great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Alice Wood will officiate. Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Enka, NC.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, at Macon Funeral Home.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Walter Gordon, Bill Peacock, Reno Fountain, Bill Cramley, Bob Golding and Marshall Henson.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wiley Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Old US 441, Wiley, GA 30581 or Regency Hospice, 434 Meeks Avenue, PO Box 494, Blairsville, GA 30512.
