Obituary for James "Jim Buck" Buchanan

James "Jim Buck" Buchanan, 72, of Franklin, passed away April 19, 2008.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Oscar Buchanan and Edna Picklesimer Buchanan. In addition he was preceded in death by five sisters, Margie Cabe, Myrtle Campbell, Annie Dykes, Ruby Justice, Hazel Rogers and one brother, Neville Buchanan. James retired in 1992 after 37 years of service from the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, a world renowned USDA, Forest Service research facility located near Otto, NC. Jim Buck contributed to many phases of the field research at Coweeta and was also effective in assisting with studies conducted by graduate students at the Laboratory. His unique sense of humor, sayings, and local knowledge of the watersheds are frequent topics of discussion by Coweeta "alumnus". One of his favorite jobs was mentoring the Ranger School students from Lake City Community College, Florida, who conducted their on the job summer training at Coweeta for many years. He was a member of Dryman's Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jerlean Buchanan; one son, Michael Buchanan of Athens, OH; brother, Kenneth Buchanan of Sharpsburgh, GA; and two sisters, Bea Bell and Tee Henry both of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Dryman's Chapel Methodist Church. Rev. Michael Binger and Rev. Tom Coss will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Macon Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Gary Buchanan, Junior Cabe, Jimmy Henry, Mike Bell, Calvin Rogers, Jerry Rogers, Albert Justice, Tommy Buchanan and Claude Campbell, Jr.

Nephews will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
