Obituary for George Walters

George Clifton Walters
December 18, 1920 - August 12, 2006
A Life Well Lived and A Legacy
George Clifton Walters, beloved husband of 64 years to wife Dorothy Walters, went home to be with God on Saturday, August 12th. His legacy to the world includes son Ronald George Walters, daughters Lynne Freyvogel and Connie Walters and his grandchildren Cheri Hempel, Cliff Hard, C.J. Anderson, Melissa Walters, Laura Walters, Elena Walters, Megan Hallmark and Caitlin Freyvogel. His adored great-grandchildren are Samuel and Nicholas Hempel. He loved & appreciated his "grands in-law, Jason Anderson, Terry Sagirs, and Ron Hempel. He is also survived by his loving sister Carolyn Holland.
Part of "The Greatest Generation, he proudly served in the United States Navy for 20 years as a Hospital Corpsman and then had an additional 10 years of government service as a United States Quarantine Officer. Dad loved his country.
Known to the world as "Daddy George and "PaPa George, he surrounded himself with children. He grew plants and he grew lives, fertilizing each one with tenderness and love. He gave rides on tractors and taught little boys how to drive a straight nail and cut a straight board and build a bird house. He believed (and taught), that it was "an honor to participate in the life of any child, and that grandchildren were "the interest on the principle. When asked about the secret to his happy marriage, he said: "Every morning I ask myself what I could do today to make her life better. And every night before I close my eyes, I ask myself: Did you do those things?' I hold myself accountable for her happiness because she deserves it. Its a great thing for children to see their father and mother love each other.
He was a giant of a man. He showed us what true strength was all about - a tender heart, faith in God and in people. He taught us about courage - how to stand strong in the face of all that is wrong and tell the truth. He taught us about economics - that true abundance is when you have enough to pay your tithe and your bills, and have something left over to share with someone who needs it. He taught us to laugh at ourselves, to love nature and children and each other. He taught us how to be good parents by being one. And he taught us to do the right thing - even when its the hardest thing to do.
He had a great capacity for love. He loved God, his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, and his church. He loved flowers and plants and blooming things. He loved his mountains and his friends. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a loyal friend.
He led a simple life, but a remarkable one. He was a man of honor and ethics and strength and faith and integrity. He was a man with so much love in his heart that it flowed out to everyone who crossed his path. He served tirelessly in his community, always giving to others, always looking for an opportunity to serve. There was great depth to his spiritualityDad lived his faith. He was a wonder of a man. A miracle of a man.
Today there is another angel in heaven. There was a great celebration when he arrived there to greet the loved ones who went on before him. And his Lord said to him, "Well done, George and Welcome Home!
The world was a better place yesterday than it is today because he is gone. We, his legacy, are now left with the responsibility of living our lives with the dignity and grace and honor that he taught us. We will miss him every single day of our lives.
Dad is in heaven, but the love remains.
Funeral Service and celebration of his life will be at Coweeta Baptist Church on Friday, August 18 at 2:00 in the afternoon and officiated by his pastor and friend, Davis Hooper.
Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
