Gene R. Hutchins, 79, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010.
Born in Defiance, OH, he was the son of the late Gerald Hutchins and Margaret Russell Hutchins. He was a US Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. Gene worked his way half way through the chairs in the Elk Lodge. He was very patriotic; was a proud member of the American Legion Funeral Detail; served 27 years with Boy Scouts of America and was a Scout Master, Quarter Master and District Commissioner and was a member of the State Board of the American Legion for the Boy Scout Counsel. Gene was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Wilson; two children, Jeff Hutchins and wife Sarah of Seminole, FL and Cheri McElrath and husband Jim of San Rafael, CA; seven step children, Brenda Garner and husband Jim of Franklin, Ted Vreeland and wife Martha of Viera, FL, Danny Vreeland and wife Teresa of Dillsboro, special niece, Nancy Morgan Brendell of Sylva, Scott Cogan, Jody Shurig and husband John Todd Cogan all of Largo, FL and Dena Butts and husband Ron of Franklin; a sister, Sondra Hale; four grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Hutchins and Lindsay and Holly McElrath and many more grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 30, in the American Legion Post 108 in Franklin. Military rites conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108.
