Obituary for Fred Wesley Saunders

Fred Wesley  Saunders
Fred W. Saunders, U.S.N Ret., departed this life Tuesday, January 13, 2009, after a long illness. Son of Charles H. and Mamie Dowdle Saunders, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert L. Saunders, Robert’s wife Beverly and their daughter Robyn Brown of Tennessee; his brother Charles Lewis Saunders and his sister Edna Henry.
He is survived by two siblings, Mrs. Emma Jane Phillips and Frank Saunders of Franklin, and several nieces and nephews, including Jeannie and Ed Allen and Sheila Ellis of Tennessee and their families.
He is mourned by his wife of 54 years, Laura M. Saunders; his son Charles W. Saunders and three grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca and Jacob of Oregon; his son, John W. Saunders and wife, Judith Tate of Rhode Island and his daughter Sandra M. Saunders of Franklin.
He was a graduate of Franklin High School class of 1944, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a teenager. Upon retiring from the Navy, he attended Johnson and Wales College in Rhode Island and was employed by Stanwyck Corporation and the U.S. Civil Service prior to returning to Macon County in 1976.
He then resumed a family tradition of farming, cattle raising and fire wood.
At his request, there will be no visitation or services.
The family wishes to thank Dr. David Franks and his staff, Angel Home Health and Hospice and their staff, the following church families: St. Francis of Assisi, Bethel Methodist and Pine Grove Baptist for their much appreciated prayers. We also offer our thanks to Father Matthew Kauth, Father Tien Duong, Rev. Alan Beck and Rev. Vic Greene of Hospice for their ministries and support during Fred’s illness.
A special note of thanks is due to Marlene and Ed Taber, Karen Johnson, Clayton Brewer, Debbie Norton, Pam Raby and Patty Cunningham.
