Obituary for Dr. Gordon Jerome Strewler

Dr. Gordon Jerome Strewler, 91, of Franklin, North Carolina, entered into rest on Sunday, May 1, 2005. He was loved by all who knew him.

A native of Racine, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late John G. Strewler and Jennie M. Johnson Strewler. Gordon attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, graduating with a bachelors in Civil Engineering followed by his M.D. degree in 1943. Dr. Strewler served as a neurosurgeon in the US Army during World War II (1944-46).

After moving to Duluth, Minnesota, in 1948, Dr. Strewler began his neurosurgical private practice which continued until 1977. He inspired us all by dedicating 10% of his practice to pro bono services for the uninsured. Dr. Strewler was active in the AMA, Duluth Surgical Society, and the Minnesota State Medical Society.

Dr. Strewler conducted medical research in the areas of thalmotomy, surgical staplers, and traction modifractions. Additionally, he founded the medical school at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, then taught there as an Associate Professor of Surgery from 1972-77.

Gordon stayed active in community organizations including the Rotary Club (1954-1980), Polinsky Rehabilitation Center, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Franklin, Tai Chi class at the Health and Fitness Center in Franklin, and the Literary Study Group of Macon County Library in Franklin.

He is survived by his companion of thirty years, Elizabeth Hill of Franklin; five children and their spouses, Dr. Gordon J. Strewler, Jr. of Brookline, MA, Tom Strewler of Superior, WI, Gertrude Strewler of Colorado Springs, CO, Barbara Strewler of Destin, FL, and Joan Strewler-Carter of Destin, FL; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Additionally, he is survived by Elizabeth Hill's family, Chris Hill, Robyn Hill Turton, Tim Turton, Zach Turton, and Leonard Hill.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2005, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 85 Sierra Drive, Franklin, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Macon County Public Library, 108 Wayah Street, Franklin, NC 28734, Angel Home Health and Hospice, 170 Church Street, Franklin, NC 28734, or the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Franklin, 85 Sierra Drive, Franklin, NC 28734.
